How to Create Superhero Games

A superhero is a character with unprecedented powers, a strong moral code and a motivation for following that code.

Many of the U.S. superheroes are part of the DC Comics or Marvel worlds. Both are media powerhouses producing comic books, television shows, movies, toys and games. But how well does even the most die hard fan know about his or her favorite superhero? And what does a fan do when he tires of games produced by other people? Making up your own games takes some knowledge of the characters, but a lot of your imagination.

Play a superhero board game. Each player makes up 20 trivia questions specific to a single hero. Question example: "What is Wonder Woman's real name?"

Create question cards with trivia questions on one side and the character's name on the other. Create a pile of extra cards with "Silly Things" written on the front and silly tasks spelled out on the back. "Silly Things" are actions like: "stand on one foot and chirp like a bird."

Distribute the hero cards evenly across a board with no more than 50 spaces. Designate a "Start" and an "End" space. Each player will be represented by a game piece. Roll a dice and move the piece accordingly. When a player lands on a Superhero, he must either answer a question about that superhero or choose a "Silly Things" card and complete the action. A player gets $50 for each question answered correctly and loses $10 for missing a question.

After all players get to the end spot, the person with the most money wins.

Create a superhero video game with video editing software like DarkBasic. DarkBasic claims it is programming for the absolute beginner, but there is a learning curve. You will need to follow the instructions on how to create a world, characters, scenarios, game objective and plots for your superheroes and villains to work through.

Play a superhero improv game. This is sometimes done by improv troupes, but can work at home as well. One player determines the name of a hero and another a situation for that hero to be involved in. Another player then acts out what the hero does in that situation for a few minutes until a new "hero" is called into play.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the board game, if four people are playing, each person will have approximately 10 turns. Each player is expected to be the expert on his or her own superhero. Should that person land on a card of his making, he must take and perform the Silly Things option to get the money. The players should be encouraged to balance their questions between well known and obscure facts. If someone is using Superman, an easy question could be what is Superman vulnerable to (kryptonite). A difficult question could be what is the name of the creature that "killed" Superman ( Doomsday). For the video game, don't be daunted when you encounter DarkBasic. It is not as difficult as it appears at first glance.
