How To Repair or Replace a Dryer

If your dryer is not functioning properly, there's no need to call a repairman right away. The problem may be small enough for you to fix yourself, saving both money and time. While not all problems can be repaired at home, many things, such as lack of heat or a malfunctioning power cord, can be fixed in just a few hours. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the dryer on a low-heat setting. Allow it to run for several minutes before opening the door to check for heat. If you do not feel any heat, turn the dryer off, and clean out the lint trap.

    • 2

Unplug the dryer, and pull it away from the wall. If it is a gas dryer, check that the pilot light has not gone out and, if it has, follow the instructions in your dryer's manual to relight it. Certain dryers may have a sticker by the pilot light with these instructions.

    • 3

Unhook the hose connecting the dryer to the wall, and clear any clogs. Make sure it has a secure fit when reattached to the dryer. Replace it with a new hose if it appears to be torn or breaking.

    • 4

Reattach the hose. Leave the dryer pulled away from the wall to give the hose enough room to function. Pushing the dryer too close to the wall can pinch the hose closed, and cut off the air flow.

    • 5

Check the gas valve behind the dryer, and make sure it is turned on. Check the fuse box in your home to make sure the proper switches are turned on.

    • 6

Check the power cord, and replace it with a new one if the cord is broken or has exposed wiring. Open the door to the dryer, and press the small switch where the door connects when shut. If the switch does not click, it will need to be replaced.

    • 7

Remove the back panel from the dryer, and look for a large belt wound around the inside components. This belt, called the drum belt, causes the dryer to turn. If your dryer is not turning, check that the belt is not broken or has slipped off the components. Replace the belt if needed, and replace the back panel.

    • 8

Reassemble any parts you replaced or removed from the dryer, and plug it back in. If the dryer still will not work, call a professional for assistance.
