How to Get DSL Without a Phone Line

A common misconception about DSL Internet service is that you need a pre-existing land-line phone for the service to work. This assumption would rule out people who only use cell phones as candidates for DSL. In reality, this is false. A number of Internet service providers offer DSL service to those who do not have a pre-existing phone line. These companies will install, along with the service, a phone line for your home to be used purely for connecting to the Internet and nothing else.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an Internet service provider that offers a DSL Internet service plan that does not require a pre-existing phone line. Both AT&T and Earthlink are two examples of companies that specialize in this (see links in the Resources section).

    • 2

Call the Internet service provider of your choice to discuss the type of monthly Internet service package you'd like to purchase. The number of these companies will be available on both their homepages and in the phone book. Be sure to ask for any specials they are currently running to help you save money. Often you can get a discount if you purchase a cable television service at the same time.

Wait for a technician to come to your home to install service. Installing Internet service is not something you can do yourself---a technician must come out to your home and set up equipment as well as the wires needed to connect your computer to the Internet. After purchasing service, a technician will usually come out within a few business days.

Test your Internet connection. While the technician is still in your home, start your computer and make sure everything is working the way the service plan specifies. If the technician leaves and only then do you realize you are having any problems, it can be a few more days before they can schedule someone to come back out.
