Recognizing and learning to deal with a dog's heat is the one of the most important aspects of owning a bitch.
Do you know the signs of heat/do you know how old a bitch should be before being allowed to breed?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

HEAT; Determine by papers or vet check the age of your bitch. Females (bitches) have heat cycles on average 2 x a year starting normally at 6-10 months. It is called "estras" lasting about 3 weeks. There usually is bleeding during part of this cycle, however bleeding my be very light and unnoticeable.

  2. Step 2

Look for signs: Signs can include an enlarged and softened vulva, or males sniffing the vulva. Bitches may become more laid back. Bitches may bring you toys. A bitch when ready to mate will flag her tail at the male. She may even lie down for the male. You can buy and use Bitches Britches to protect from bleeding but they are not 100% reliable for preventing pregnancy.

  3. Step 3

Keep undesired males away: If a bitch ties with male there is mismate shot that can be given within 24 hours by vet. The shot is not always recommended. The easiest way to prevent unwanted pregnancies is to make sure there are no opportunities for mating. This may mean placing male dogs in boarding situation. It can include keeping your female dog inside unless accompanied outside.

  4. Step 4

If you have missed the signs of heat and suspect pregnancy, confer with your veterinarian for advice. Knowing the signs of heat should help deal with situations leading to pregnancy.
