How to become a Freemason

How to become a Freemason thumbnail
Freemasonry is the oldest, largest fraternity in the world.

The Freemasons aren't a secret order, but rather, an order with secrets. As a benevolent organization, Masons believe in a Supreme Being, a life centered on honor, integrity, open-mindedness, charitable endeavors, civic duty and brotherly love. Membership is open to men over age 18, age 21 in some states, who share Masonry values and a yearning for growth. In the spirit of one common catch phrase attributed to the Masons, "to be one, ask one."

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local Masonic lodge for information about upcoming events. Lodge listings can be found in any phone book, or contact the Grand Lodge of your state or jurisdiction. Most lodges have brothers dedicated to communicating with potential members.

    • 2

Gather information and attend Masonic events hosted in the community, not only to become familiar with the fraternity's charitable endeavors, but to get to know the brothers. Ideally, these men will become lifelong friends that you'll share many hours with. It's important to ensure that you're a good fit with the group.

    • 3

Connect with a few brothers in the fraternity. Ask them what types of community and social events the group is involved with and what they enjoy most about being a brother.

    • 4

Obtain contact information from those you feel comfortable with and promise to follow up for more information.

    • 5

Outline a few talking points about yourself. Focus on what you can bring to the fraternity and what you hope to receive in return. Highlight your family, interests, religious beliefs and education; these are the areas you may need to discuss. Freemasonry is a benevolent institution predicated on charitable work, a belief in a Supreme Being and a yearning for growth and improvement. Only men illustrating these qualities will be successful.

    • 6

Call a brother when you are ready to move forward. Reiterate your interest in the fraternity and be prepared to answer preliminary questions about your interest and expectations.

    • 7

      Complete a petition, if prompted.

    • 8

Attend all subsequent interviews and events as required to complete the application and intake process. Necessary steps vary by individual chapter, but usually include a formal application and fees. Other requirements vary according to tradition and protocols at the local level.
