Walking man's best friend can be difficult and dangerous at times. It is important to have a properly trained pup to make walks more enjoyable for the both of you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • collar
  • leash
  • treats
  1. Step 1

Start young! The sooner the better when it comes to leash training. Some dogs have never had a collar or leash on and may be quite nervous about a first walk. Putting on a proper fitting collar and attaching the leash that is secure is very important.

  2. Step 2

Once the leash and collar are on the dog let them get used to the feeling. Let the dog drag the leash behind them in a secure area. It allows them to get used to having something hold them back. Do this a couple times with gradual increase in the amount of time for each session.

  3. Step 3

If your dog seems comfortable with the leash start holding the leash and letting the dog wander where it wants to go. If they start pulling then just stop and turn the opposite way.

  4. Step 4

When the tension on the leash is released turn back and allow the dog to keep walking. If they pull again then continue the previous step.

  5. Step 5

Starting out with short sessions is important. At the end of each session be sure to reward your dog for doing well. As your dog improves increase your sessions and pretty soon you will be taking long enjoyable walks with your pup!

Tips & Warnings
  • 6 foot leashes allow an ample amount of space between you and your dog with you still being in control.
  • Its important not to pull on the leash but to just stop when the dog pulls.
  • Don't over use the treats or they will just expect them all of the time.
  • Continue sessions in different locations to help your dog learn better..ie: the park, the beach, in a parking lot..
  • Never leave your dog unattended with a leash attached.
  • Be sure your collar is properly fitted with 2 fingers easily fitted under the collar to prevent trachea damage.
