The Salvation Army collects donations of money and goods to help the poor.

Local posts of the Salvation Army accept donations of unwanted items for the less fortunate. Most items are sold in Salvation Army thrift stores. The charity uses the proceeds to assist individuals and families who need help with clothing, food and shelter. Donate clothing, household items, appliances -- even vehicles -- to help the Salvation Army's work in your community.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by going through your home and cleaning out any items that you no longer need. These items can include clothing, electronics, furniture, appliances and anything else of value that you no longer need. Pack them up and mark the boxes appropriately.

    • 2

Check the phone book or look online at satruck.org for the contact information for your local Salvation Army post. Call to ask about scheduling a pickup. Some cities offer online scheduling through the main Salvation Army website. If pickup isn't available in your area, ask about drop-off locations and hours.

    • 3

Finish preparing your items for pickup, following any instructions provided by the local post. Ask the driver for a donation receipt if you need it for tax purposes.

    • 4

Take your donation boxes to the a Salvation Army donation site if pickup isn't an option. Salvation Army workers will unload the items and write you a donation receipt. You can also take smaller items to an unmanned site, if available in your area.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you only have a small bag or two of small donations, you can drop the donated items off at the many salvation drop boxes around your local city or around the thrift store anytime day or night.
