Cinnamon extract comes in handy when preparing baked goods and candies. Making your own extract at home allows you to control the intensity of the cinnamon flavor. Homemade cinnamon extract will last for a year or more on the pantry shelf. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Light rum
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • Glass jar with a tight-fitting lid

      Break two cinnamon sticks in half and put them in the glass jar.

      Pour 1 cup of light rum over the cinnamon sticks.

      Twist the cover onto the jar and give the contents a little shake.

      Put the jar in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed, away from excess heat and bright light.

      Shake or swirl the contents of the jar once a day for one to two weeks. The longer you wait the stronger your extract will be.

      Remove the cinnamon sticks when the extract is the potency you desire. Cover the jar and store it at room temperature.

Tips & Warnings

  • The stronger your extract is, the less you will have to add to get the cinnamon flavor in your cooking.

  • You can use plain vodka in place of the light rum.
