We all want a car and most of us need a car but when it comes to buying a car we let our desire take over. Whether shopping for a new or used car let's shop smart!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Patience
  • Internet
  1. Step 1

Do Your Research! - First and foremost know your information. A salesperson is loooking for that person to come through the door that doesn't have a clue.

  2. Step 2

Know How Much You Can Spend! - YOU know what you can afford. There are financing calculators that will tell you exactly what you can afford. Remember we are shopping smart!

  3. Step 3

Know what you need! - Regardless of what you want knowing what you need puts you in a better place to negotiate. Salespeople will prey on your desires. You will most likely get what you want but if you are too anxious your negotiations will go differently.

  4. Step 4

Visit Many Dealerships! - Competition is healthy. Dealerships will compete for your business. Tell each of them what the others are offering you for the same vehicle. Pay close attention to incentives that are currently offered. They vary dealership to dealership.

  5. Step 5

Never accept the first deal! - If the dealership truly wants your business they will present a good deal but never the first deal. They have to test you to make sure you are serious about buying a car. In addition if you do accept the first deal they know you didn't follow step one. This is a plus for the dealership. There markup is crazy!

  6. Step 6

Don't Feel Pressured! - Buy a car at your own pace. This is a big investment. It may be a good deal being presented but it may not be the right time for you. YOU are in control. You have every right to say NO.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is nothing against salespeople they're doing what they were trained to do.
  • You have to shop smart especially in this economy.
