Candles are both popular and sometimes expensive. But, making your own homemade scented candles saves money and is fun. Follow the steps below to make homemade scented candles. Several different methods for candle making are out there, this article uses the mold method where candles are shaped using a mold. For information about other methods, see the resources section at the end of this article.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Double boiler
  • Wicks
  • Soy or paraffin wax
  • Essential oil (any scent)
  • Toothpicks
  • Food coloring if desired
  • Thermometer
  • Candle mold (think creatively like a class or jar)
  1. Step 1

Purchase or gather all the necessary equipment. All the above items are available at supermarkets or craft stores. The essential oils, used in aromatherapy, can be purchased online or in a health/nutrition store.

  2. Step 2

Set up a work space close to a heat source. The kitchen table with easy access to the stove would be perfect. Cover the workspace with newspaper or towels to avoid a mess.

  3. Step 3

Set up the double boiler, which can just be two pots. Place the wax you plan on using into a small pot. Place the small pot into a larger one filled partly with water. Turn the stove onto low and wait for the wax to reach about 170 degrees. A pound of wax is equal to about 8 candles.

  4. Step 4

Remove the pot from the heat source after the wax has melted. Add the essential oil, a drop or two is fine. Add the dye and stir to the wax and dye mixture to create the desired color.

  5. Step 5

Prepare the wicks and molds by placing the molds on the covered surface. Make sure the molds are level.

  6. Step 6

Center the wicks into the mold and place a small amount of wax around the molds to hold them in place. Allow about five minutes for the wax to dry before filling the mold with the remaining wax.

  7. Step 7

Remove the candle from the mold once the wax has hardened completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid getting water in the candle by wiping off the double boiler pan.
  • Remember wax is hot. Keep children and pets away from the candle-making area or supervise them carefully.
