Finding low cost pet insurance is actually quite an easy thing to do. Despite the fact that pet insurance can actually make your visits to the vet much more affordable, many people are unaware that health insurance for animals even exists. Some people may also be under the idea that the cost of pet insurance is comparable to the cost of private insurance for a person. The truth is, however, that depending on the breed, age, gender and type of animal, you can get affordable pet insurance for as little as $5 a month.

If you are concerned about the health of your pet, but are tired of paying for expensive veterinarian care, read on to learn more about how to get low cost pet insurance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go online to get pet insurance quotes. You will need to fill in some required information, such as your pet's age, gender, breed and medical history. If you do not know your pet's exact date of birth, you will need to make a general estimate. You may have to try a number of different websites to get information on a good range of quotes.

  2. Step 2

Review the different policies available for your pet, as well as the different prices. Although you may be shopping for low cost pet insurance, it's not always wise to select the cheapest pet insurance policy available, as you may not get a good value for your money. Take some time to compare the different policies and do some research to find out what sort of coverage is most necessary for your pet. Pet insurance policies can cover a wide number of things, depending on the plan you choose. Possible coverage may include illness, accident, surgery, MRIs, CT scans, x-rays, medication, cancer treatment, euthanasia, et cetera. Some policies will even cover holistic treatments, such as acupuncture. Make sure you know how much your pet is covered for a specific illness or treatment, as well as how much coverage you will get overall for a year (or lifetime).

  3. Step 3

Contact your potential insurer to discuss any questions you may have about getting low cost pet insurance. Important things to ask are whether or not you can still use your own vet with their policy, and whether or not your plan will cover ongoing conditions, should your pet develop one. If you are satisfied with their response, sign up with your selected pet health insurer.
