The word yuppie was coined in the 80s. Yuppie stood for young upwardly mobile professional. These instructions focus the female yuppie office look.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find an 80's woman's power suit. It must have a knee length straight skirt. Many offices still didn't allow women to work in pants in the 80s. The jacket should have wide shoulder pads, and a loose cut.

  2. Step 2

Wear a woven blouse under the suit. A distinctively 80s blouse style had a bow at the neck. You can get this look with a scarf. Small scarves around the neck were popular with suits. Simple shells cut like a t-shirt were common too. Blouses that resembled men's button up shirts weren't as common.

  3. Step 3

Wear nylons. You didn't go to the office with bare legs in the 80s. Bring some clear nail polish for the runs.

  4. Step 4

Wear running shoes and socks over the nylons. In the office, you'd wear pointy toed high heel pumps without straps. The high heels would kill your feet if you had to walk very far during your commute, so many women would wear running shoes and keep the heels in their desk, particularly in New York, or other cities where you needed to take public transit to work.

  5. Step 5

Carry a brand name bag, especially one from that company that starts with the letter C.

  6. Step 6

Carry a beeper or brick sized cell phone.

  7. Step 7

Do your hair big with lots of hair spray.

  8. Step 8

Wear clunky jewelry. Plastic or painted metal jewelery in geometric shapes goes with the theme. A big squiggly broach on your lapel is another 80s business fad.
