A telephone jack is the device that you must plug a telephone into in order to use it. The jack is connected to the telephone wires in the wall and will determine the specific telephone line that your telephone will be connected to. A telephone jack can connect a telephone device with up to three lines, although most devices will only use one line.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Identify the traditional color codes for telephone wiring. Line one uses red for the negative (ring) lead and green for the positive (tip) lead. Line two uses yellow for the ring and black for the tip. Line 3 uses blue for the ring and orange for the tip.

  2. Step 2

Study the color code for the newer Cat 5e/6 standard. Line one uses blue for the ring and white with a blue stripe for the tip. Line two uses orange for the ring and white with an orange stripe for the tip. Line three uses green for the ring and white with a green stripe for the tip.

  3. Step 3

Examine the two innermost pins of the telephone jack on the inside of the faceplate. Trace the wire that’s connected to the left innermost pin and identify its terminal as terminal A. This terminal will be for the tip wire. The right innermost pin is for the ring wire its terminal will be identified as terminal B.

  4. Step 4

Determine the line you wish to connect to and snip the ends of this pair of wires to produce cleanly cut ends. Strip the insulation from the last 1/2-inch of these two wires. Wrap the bare tip wire around the screw for terminal A and wrap the bare ring wire around the screw for terminal B. Tighten the terminal screws to hold the wires in place.

  5. Step 5

Insert the telephone plug into the telephone jack and ensure your telephone is receiving a dial tone. You will need to troubleshoot your connections until you get a good dial tone. Once your phone is properly connected, you can fasten the jack to the wall using the pair of long screws that came with your telephone jack.
