How to Improve Sparse Eyebrows

If you have little or no eyebrows because of over-plucking, scars, or aging, there are solutions--both temporary and permanent. Before deciding on something permanent, wait for a few weeks to make sure all of your remaining hairs have grown out. Then consider these options:

1. Use eyebrow pencils and eyeshadow.

   This is a common, inexpensive, but temporary solution. First, fill in bare spots using a pencil shade that matches your natural brow. Be careful not to be too heavy-handed with the lines, as it is easy for them to look too harsh. Use a slightly lighter eyeshadow shade to go over your whole eyebrow--to blend the lines and create a softer look.

2. Get micro-pigmentation (tattoo).

   Permanent makeup artists can tattoo bare spots in sparse eyebrows to make eyebrows look fuller. Like other tattoos, this is a permanent solution. Before choosing your permanent makeup artist, be sure s/he has had specific training in micropigmentation. Also ask to review his/her portfolio. Some artists draw eyebrow lines too "perfectly", so they do not look natural. If you want your eyebrows to look natural, make sure your artist will know how to do that for you.

3. Consider hair grafts, also called follicular unit transplantation.

   Hair can be transplanted from the scalp and implanted in your eyebrow. Because this hair will continue to grow like hair on the head, it needs to be trimmed regularly. This procedure is also a permanent solution. It should be performed by a medical doctor.
