How to Winterize a MerCruiser Engine

Properly servicing and preparing your MerCruiser engine for cold weather will extend its life. Water left in the engine may freeze and crack the block or damage the manifold system---and "damage caused by freezing or improper winterization is not covered by the MerCruiser limited warranty," according to the company website. Fuel left untreated in the engine may break down and lead to varnish deposits that clog injectors or jets. Unchanged lubricant left in the drive could cause water to accumulate in the lower unit and freeze, causing damage.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open the petcocks on the cooling system by turning them counterclockwise to drain water from the engine block and the exhaust manifolds. Remove the hoses to drain them one at a time. Then reinstall one end of each hose and pour antifreeze into it before reinstalling the other end.

  2. Step 2

Drain the cooling system completely and change the antifreeze. Use marine antifreeze with a rust inhibitor in the seawater area of the cooling system.

  3. Step 3

Fog the engine with fogging oil---available at marine dealers and most discount stores---to help prevent exposure to condensation and rust during the winter. Fog the carburetor with fogging oil, or pour a small quantity of 20-weight motor oil down its throat with the engine at a fast idle; then flood the engine by pouring a large amount of the oil into the carburetor, choking off the engine.

  4. Step 4

Change the engine oil and oil filter. Used oil tends to accumulate condensation faster because of microscopic filings floating in it.

  5. Step 5

Remove the outdrive, and inspect and grease the universal joint and the bearings. Condensation in this area and will cause damage over time.

  6. Step 6

Mist the electrical system and the engine with silicone spray to help prevent rust from gaining a foothold on bare metal or damaged paint.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank during your last trip of the season, and add more as part of winterization. Use the winterization process as a time to touch up paint on the drive and engine, and to check the condition of the propeller.
  • This project involves work with tools and chemicals, including antifreeze. Use drip pans when working with antifreeze; its main components are deadly to pets and wildlife. Appropriate precautions are advised.
