Things You'll Need:
- Wrenches
- Screwdriver
- Fogging oil
- Motor oil and filter
- Outdrive grease
- Drip pans
-
Step 1
Open the petcocks on the cooling system by turning them counterclockwise to drain water from the engine block and the exhaust manifolds. Remove the hoses to drain them one at a time. Then reinstall one end of each hose and pour antifreeze into it before reinstalling the other end.
-
Step 2
Drain the cooling system completely and change the antifreeze. Use marine antifreeze with a rust inhibitor in the seawater area of the cooling system.
-
Step 3
Fog the engine with fogging oil---available at marine dealers and most discount stores---to help prevent exposure to condensation and rust during the winter. Fog the carburetor with fogging oil, or pour a small quantity of 20-weight motor oil down its throat with the engine at a fast idle; then flood the engine by pouring a large amount of the oil into the carburetor, choking off the engine.
-
Step 4
Change the engine oil and oil filter. Used oil tends to accumulate condensation faster because of microscopic filings floating in it.
-
Step 5
Remove the outdrive, and inspect and grease the universal joint and the bearings. Condensation in this area and will cause damage over time.
-
Step 6
Mist the electrical system and the engine with silicone spray to help prevent rust from gaining a foothold on bare metal or damaged paint.
