How to Use Karo Syrup as a Dog Cough Medicine

Prolonged coughing by a dog can be a sign of kennel cough, an upper respiratory infection called tracheobronchitis that is caused by a mixture of bacteria and viruses. Kennel cough can be very serious, even deadly and should be treated by your veterinarian. However there are also many other less serious issues that might cause a dog to cough that can be treated at home.

  • Medicine dropper
  • Karo syrup
  • Peppermint essential oil

      Mix 1 tablespoon of Karo syrup and 1 drop of peppermint essential oil in a small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water, mix thoroughly until well blended.

      Fill a medicine dropper with the Karo syrup mixture by squeezing the empty dropper in the bowl of liquid.

      Squeeze the Karo syrup mixture from the dropper into the dogs mouth quickly, while making sure to coat the tongue. Depending on the size of the dog, administer one to three droppers full of the cough medicine mixture.

      Store any remaining cough medicine in a covered container in the refrigerator until needed.
