How to Heal a Hunting Dog's Foot Pads
A hunting dog spends a lot of time on his feet running through rough terrain. Rocks, thistles and debris can irritate and injure your dog's foot pads. You can heal injuries in your hunting dog's foot pads or help him heal from a long day walking outdoors by following several steps.

1
Put your dog in a dim and quiet room. If he is injured he will need to calm down. Talk softly to your dog while you pet him so that you gain your trust and so that he knows you mean him no harm.
-
2
Pick up each of his paws in turn and examine them, turning on a light if you need to. Look for burrs, sticks, rocks or anything else stuck in the paws, taking special care to look between the toes.Remove what you find.

-
3
Look for cuts and abrasions on his pads and between his toes.
-
4
Wash each of his paws separately in a large bowl full of warm and clean water. Examine his paws once you have washed them off, paying special attention to each cut and abrasion to make sure that each injury is clean and free of debris.
-
5
Dry your dog's foot with a clean and soft towel. Apply triple D antibiotic or any other over the counter antibiotic ointment to your dog's injured pads. Loosely wrap any foot that has an open sore or an injury that needs medical attention.
-
6
Leave other small abrasions and cuts exposed to air so that a dog might clean and lick them himself.
