How to Set Hairstyles

A head full of voluminous, bouncy curls can be achieved with hot rollers, Velcro rollers, or, if you have time, you can roll your hair when it is wet and let it dry in regular rollers. Before the technology of hot rollers and hair dryers, women would set their hair by putting it in rollers overnight. Now that we have at-home thermal hairstyling technology, we can save time and not have to sacrifice comfort for beauty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Brush your hair thoroughly and apply just a little leave-in conditioner for extra shine; do not use too much or you will weigh down the hair. Make a part in your hair or comb it straight back. Divide your hair into a top and bottom section, and hold the top section up with a clip.

Roll your hair in the rollers. Be sure to work with sections of hair that match the size of the rollers you are using. You will need just enough hair to cover the roller evenly; do not make the section too thick or you may get pieces of hair that won't curl. Use clips or bobby pins to hold the rollers in place. If you are using Velcro rollers in wet hair, use a hair dryer to set them or apply setting lotion and let them dry.

Wait for the rollers to cool, or for your hair to dry if you rolled them while damp. Unroll carefully without tugging. Once all the rollers are out, arrange your curls the way you want them. Hold them with clips or bobby pins if necessary. Spritz on hairspray so the curls hold their shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use the wet-to-dry roller technique with extra-large rollers. This provides a straight look but without the heat.
