A flail chest describes a very serious trauma injury. It occurs when multiple anterior and posterior ribs break or collapse. This is caused by a significant force applied to the chest, as might occur in a car accident or assault. In patients with osteoporosis or other bone conditions, less force is required to cause a flail chest. Complications can arise if fractured ribs puncture or interfere with the heart or lungs.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Always wear your seat belt. The most common cause of a flail chest is a car accident, and seat belts are often effective at reducing injury risk during such an event.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your car is fitted with airbags, anti-lock brakes, and other safety mechanisms. Driving a safe car can do a great deal to protect you from injury should you experience a crash.

  3. Step 3

Maintain good bone health. The stronger your bones, the less likely it is you will suffer a flail chest. To keep your bones strong, ensure you get sufficient calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Regular exercise is also helpful in maintaining a strong skeletal system.
