      Use the Windows Task Manager. If a program freezes up or stops working to the point where closing it isn't even an option, you can press "CTRL", "ALT" and "DEL" on your keyboard simultaneously to bring up the Task Manager. From here you can click on the "Processes" tab, select the name of the program that is giving you a hard time and click "End Task" to shut it down.

      Use "Safe Mode". If you have a virus that your anti-virus software is having difficulty removing, boot your computer into "Safe Mode". This is a specialized mode designed to only start the computer with exactly the resources necessary to boot and nothing else. By running your virus scan in "Safe Mode" it will detect and quarantine a number of viruses that it otherwise wouldn't have had access to.

      Select the "System Restore" option from the "Start" menu you can "roll back" your computer to the exact way it was working on an earlier date. This is beneficial if settings have rendered portions of your computer unusable. "System Restore" will undo any changes you've made to your computer after a date you specify, completely fixing most problems you're having.

      Defragment your hard drive. By using Windows built-in Disk Defragmenter utility your computer will rearrange all the data on your hard drive in such a way as to make it more accessible. This can solve a number of system performance related problems that occur normally with computers.
