How to Get a Ventrilo Server for Free
Ventrilo, or Vent for short, is one of the most popular voice chat systems for online gaming. However, most Ventrilo servers require a monthly subscription for you to be able to use them. Thankfully, a few alternatives exist on the Internet to provide you with free access to a Ventrilo server for your guild or group. Connecting to these servers is just as simple as connecting to another typical server.

Point your browser to the Freevent Website (see Resources)

Click on the "Show Password" link on the front page of the website.

Record all of the connection information, including username, password, and IP Address.

Open Ventrilo, and click on the arrow next to the list of server names.

Click on the "New" button, and give the server a name of your choice.

Input the information you recorded in step 3 in their corresponding boxes in the Connection Editor. When finished, press "OK".

Tips & Warnings
You may also choose to host your own personal Ventrilo server for free using the server software. However, the free version of the software only holds up to 8 slots. Anything further, and you'll need to pay. You also may want to set up a Teamspeak server, which is open-source, and therefore free to use for any amount of slots, as long as it isn't for commercial use.
While this is a free Ventrilo server, it is also a public server, meaning anyone, not just your guild, has easy access to the server. This makes you more likely to be a victim of Ventrilo harassment, having spies on your server, or any other crashers on it. This also means other people will want to use the server, so you shouldn't hog the server for yourself and your guild. Other people could need the server just as badly, so if you don't need it, get off it so others can get on. The server can also go down or not be available due to slots being taken by other people. You may want to have a backup such as the voice chat system in most MMORPGS.
