Step 1
Start my making a concrete goal. Don’t just say you want to lose weight – pick a healthy number. Realize it’s not all going to happen in the next month. Know that in the beginning you’ll lose a lot at once, then it will taper off. Don’t give up because you can get just as much joy from maintenance as you can from losing the weight.
-
Step 2
Evaluate your diet. I stopped eating white breads and potatoes and cheese. I tried a million different fruits and vegetables until I found ones I liked and could eat every day. Try fruits and vegetables in new ways. See article in Resource Section below for a delicious and healthy broccoli salad. Eat a salad of any sort every day for one of your meals. Start your day off with a cold glass of water to get your metabolism going then make sure to eat tiny amounts throughout the day. Eat spicy foods if you don’t get heartburn. Have snacks available – don’t starve because when you finally reach food you’ll probably eat too much.
-
Step 3
Exercise. You don't have to exercise a lot to lose weight. I started out by jogging in place for 15 minutes at a time. I couldn’t believe how much better I felt, and how my waist was getting thinner. Eventually pick up your exercising so that you’re getting 30 minutes of cardio a day most 4-5 days a week. Fit in a walk at lunch. Take a walk after dinner. Put on some music and incorporate dancing into your housecleaning. Just move around – you’ll start to notice a difference.
-
Step 4
Finally: stop thinking about food. This is probably why I failed every diet I ever tried – I was always thinking about not eating, which of course made me hungry. Fill your life up with other things. Get active with your kids/family. Pick up a hobby outside of your home so you can’t get up and go to the kitchen when you get bored. Read at the library rather than at home so you aren’t tempted to get up and grab a bite.
-
Step 5
Most of all, believe in yourself. Small successes are important, and relapses happen. If you really want to lose weight, you will.

on 11/15/2009 Water before breakfast, eh? I'll try that. I already do all the rest, and this is very good advice. I switched from cereal to fruit for breakfast; I hope that helps!

on 11/15/2009 You're right, it does not take a ton of excercising to make a difference. Even a simple walk! 5*
