Fit a Bike Helmet Properly

It is important for kids and adults to fit their bike helmets correctly. Riding a bicycle is a wonderful low-impact exercise, but injuries can occur in falls. The most dangerous type of bike injuries is to the head. Many of these injuries can be prevented by choosing the correct bike helmets and following the directions to adjust to the proper fit. Outfitting your child in a kids safety helmet is especially important. It is important to child personal safety and your peace of mind.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the right bike helmet. Our heads come in different size and shapes. Be prepared to try on several brands. The helmet should be snug, but not uncomfortably tight. Most bicycle helmets come with more then one size of foam pads which can be secured with Velcro inside the helmet. Try the different sizes of foam to get the most comfortable fit.

  2. Step 2

Sit the helmet straight on your child’s head. The front edge should be one or two fingers width above the eyebrows and cover most of the forehead.

  3. Step 3

Center the left side of the buckle under the chin. Remove the helmet to adjust the straps if it is too short or long. Bike helmets buckles should not be on the side. The chinstrap should be snug enough so you cannot fit more then two fingers underneath. Have your child open his mouth wide and see if he can feel the helmet pull down on the top of his head. If not, re-adjust to improve your child’s safety.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the straps on the bike helmet to form a “V” just below each ear. This is done by moving the slider on each side. If possible, lock the sliders. If the straps are adjusted incorrectly, they will come off more easily in a fall.

  5. Step 5

Tug on the helmet to make sure it does not shift more than an inch in any direction. Re-adjust the bicycle helmet straps as needed. If this does not fix it and the child still feel comfortable, try another model.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow extra time to fit the helmet in the store before buying it.
  • If fitting a child, find a time when they are relaxed and not rushed. Make sure it is fit property before they are ready to get on the bike.
