Step 1
Choose the right bike helmet. Our heads come in different size and shapes. Be prepared to try on several brands. The helmet should be snug, but not uncomfortably tight. Most bicycle helmets come with more then one size of foam pads which can be secured with Velcro inside the helmet. Try the different sizes of foam to get the most comfortable fit.
-
Step 2
Sit the helmet straight on your child’s head. The front edge should be one or two fingers width above the eyebrows and cover most of the forehead.
-
Step 3
Center the left side of the buckle under the chin. Remove the helmet to adjust the straps if it is too short or long. Bike helmets buckles should not be on the side. The chinstrap should be snug enough so you cannot fit more then two fingers underneath. Have your child open his mouth wide and see if he can feel the helmet pull down on the top of his head. If not, re-adjust to improve your child’s safety.
-
Step 4
Adjust the straps on the bike helmet to form a “V” just below each ear. This is done by moving the slider on each side. If possible, lock the sliders. If the straps are adjusted incorrectly, they will come off more easily in a fall.
-
Step 5
Tug on the helmet to make sure it does not shift more than an inch in any direction. Re-adjust the bicycle helmet straps as needed. If this does not fix it and the child still feel comfortable, try another model.
