Real estate agents (sales licensees)must be licensed by the state's Department of Real Estate. The process is similar for each state, with some major differences. For one thing, real estate laws vary from state to state. In some states, real estate transactions require the participation of an attorney. That is not the case in Arizona, where a licensed real estate agent is able to prepare a sales contract and complete the transaction without the assistance of an attorney. But first, they need to be licensed by the state of Arizona.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Celebrate your 18th birthday. There is an age requirement for sales licensees. Before becoming a licensed agent, you must be at least 18 years of age.

  2. Step 2

Enroll in real estate school and complete 90 hours. The school must be approved by the Arizona Department of Real Estate and the classes must be approved by the Department for fulfilling the licensing requirements.

  3. Step 3

Pass the class test. After completing the course, the applicant must pass the class test.

  4. Step 4

Complete an application with the Arizona Department of Real Estate. Link is included in resources.

  5. Step 5

Get fingerprinted with an agency approved by the Arizona Department of Real Estate. You will send these to the Department of Real Estate and submit to a background check. If an applicant has a criminal background, they can be denied a license.

  6. Step 6

Take and complete the State and Federal Real Estate exams. These are administered by a testing center approved by the Arizona Department of Real Estate, and there is a fee. If you fail to pass one or more test, the test failed can be retaken, yet the applicant will need to pay for re-testing.

  7. Step 7

Pay a licensing fee to the Arizona Department of Real Estate, and submit the completed application and proof that all tests have been completed.

  8. Step 8

Hang your license with a licensed broker. All new sales licensees must work under a licensed broker.

  9. Step 9

Complete a 6-hour continuing education course in Contract Law and Contract Writing. This must be completed before the license is activated.
