Make a cat bed warmer for cats that stay outside in winter. Most outdoor cats tolerate the climate by growing a longer fur coat, but some cats could use a little warmth on really cold nights.

You can buy kitty a warmer of some kind--maybe like the deer hunters use, or you can make the cat a bed warmer with products you have at home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An old sock
  • A cup or more of uncooked rice
  • Maybe a sewing machine
  1. Step 1

Use a sock or a bag.

Find an old sock with a close weave in the fabric, so tiny contents will not sift through. Alternatively, find a little cotton bag (like a rice bag) with a close weave and any old sock. Be sure your sock is microwave safe without any metallic threads.

  2. Step 2

Add rice to the sock or bag.

Place a cup or so of uncooked loose rice in the bag or sock. Dried corn also works for this.

  3. Step 3

Sew with a sewing machine, or tie the sock closed to create a cat bed warmer.

Decide how you want to close the bag or sock. If you choose to sew it closed, use a sewing machine because your hand sewing will probably not keep the rice inside the bag or sock. If you use a cotton bag, close the bag with sewing machine stitches, put the bag in the sock and tie the sock closed with an overhand knot. Do not use staples, as they are not microwaveable.

  4. Step 4

Use the microwave to heat the cat bed warmer.

Microwave the sock with the dry rice or corn inside for about a minute. Watch it carefully, and be sure it does not get too hot.

  5. Step 5

    Wrap in a small towel.

Wrap the cat bed warmer in a hand towel and put it under the spot where the kitty sleeps. This will keep your cat purring throughout the night, with its own cat bed warmer.
