-
Step 1
Take inventory of what is in your room. Look in your closet, under the bed, on the book shelves, in and around night tables and in your dressers to get a feel of your possessions. Go through your desk drawers to see if you still have old papers and school assignments. See if old bills are hidden in your desk drawers. Write down what you have and mark whether or not you use all the items.
-
Step 2
Get rid of the things that you do not use regularly. Take clothes that you have not worn or no longer wear to the local Salvation Army. Bring shoes that are sitting in your closet to your local Goodwill. Empty your dresser drawers of anything that has not been worn in the last year. File your bills. Go through the books on your bookshelves and donate the ones you aren't reading to the local library. Recycle the school assignments from last year. Decluttering your life will make it easier for you to organize your space.
-
Step 3
Purchase storage containers that will fit under your bed. Put shoes, sweaters and jeans in these containers. Buy small baskets that will fit in your drawers. Use them to put socks and underwear in. Obtain desk organizers that will provide a place for you to put your writing utensils. These organizers should also supply a place for you to put complete assignments. Get a clothes hamper that will fit in the corner of your closet for dirty clothes.
-
Step 4
Once you have decluttered and organized your possessions, make sure that you maintain your new organization. Spend one afternoon every two weeks throwing away and recycling unnecessary items. Go through containers to make sure that they are still neat and orderly.
-
Step 5
Don't get discouraged if your first attempts at organizing do not end as well as you like. It takes time to overcome ingrained habits. Just keep trying and you will succeed in having an organized space.
