How to Find Contacts on MSN

MSN Messenger is the instant messaging client provided by the Microsoft Passport Network. As with other instant messaging applications, users are able to add friends' names to their contact list. Users can find Messenger contacts in the MSN Member Directory using information such as a contact's email address or mobile phone number. Users can also find and add contacts that are not part of the Passport network by inviting them to join.

      Log in to your MSN Messenger account using your email and password. You will be routed to the main Messenger screen.

      Find contacts using their email addresses. Click on "Add a Contact," which is located at the bottom of the contact list. Alternatively, click on the "Contacts" menu at the top of the window. Select "Add a Contact". The "Add a Contact" dialog box will appear. Check the option that allows you to create a new contact from a user's email address. Click "Next". Follow the prompts provided by the Messenger wizard.

      Search for a contact in the MSN Directory using their name if you do not know a contact's email address. Select "Search for a Contact" from the "Contacts" menu. Click on "Advanced Search". Fill out the search form by providing the required details about the contact.

      Repeat step 2 if you wish to find a contact using his mobile number. Select the "Create a new contact from a mobile number" option in the "Add a Contact" dialog box. Click "Next". Provide the country or region code and the contact's mobile number. Click "Next" and then "Finish".

      Keep in mind that each newly added contact will receive a notification that you wish to include him in your contact list. His name will appear in your contact list only once he has accepted the request.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can only add contacts that have a Microsoft Passport Network Account to your MSN Messenger contact list. Contacts who have an MSN Hotmail e-mail addresses automatically have a Passport Network account. If you are unable to find a contact, he may not be a member of the Microsoft .NET Passport network. Authorize the Messenger service to send an email to the contact explaining how he can sign up for a Messenger account. Access the wizard that sends out this request by clicking on "Contacts" and selecting "Add a Contact".
