Power antennas are prone to failure. Luckily, replacing them isn't too difficult or time-consuming. The most probable cause for power antenna failure is the motor, meaning you will need to replace the entire assembly to make it work again. This tutorial will work for all Mercury Mystique models (produced 1995-2000) as well as its sister vehicle, the Ford Contour.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pliers
  • Rag
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement power antenna assembly
  1. Step 1

Turn your engine off, let the antenna lower completely and unhook your negative battery cable.

  2. Step 2

Pop your trunk and remove the push pins from the passenger side trunk panel to access the power antenna motor.

  3. Step 3

Unplug the three connections attached to the power antenna assembly and motor. The first is a standard power cable; the other two are electrical modules.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the the antenna nut on the outside of the fender with a small rag (so you don't scratch it), and remove it with the pliers. Twist it counterclockwise to remove it.

  5. Step 5

Take out the two retaining bolts mounted against the inside of the trunk. Pull the power antenna motor and assembly out of the trunk.

  6. Step 6

Attach the new antenna to the mounting assembly and motor if you are only replacing the antenna mast. If you are replacing the entire assembly, simply mount the new assembly inside the trunk panel. Use the bolts you removed earlier to mount it.

  7. Step 7

Replace the three connections (power cable and two modules). Position the tip of the antenna mast in the mounting hole, and hold it while you replace the outside antenna nut. The outside antenna nut can be replaced by turning it clockwise with your hand, then using a rag and pliers to fully tighten it.

  8. Step 8

Replace the passenger side trunk panel and the push pins.

Tips & Warnings
  • In most cases of power antenna failure, you will be replacing the entire assembly, rather than just the antenna. The existing motor is most likely the reason for antenna failure, unless it is physically damaged.
