Black (African American) hair is in a kinky curly state when natural and unprocessed. Caring for natural hair requires special attention to keep it healthy and looking good. Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Grapeseed oil
  • Shampoo
  • Moisturizing conditioner
  • Thick towel
  • Leave-in conditioner or detangling spray
  • Pomade
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Wide tooth soft plastic com
  • Hair clips
  1. Step 1

Add oil like grapeseed oil to the hair prior to washing it to create a beneficial oil-soap emulsion. This emulsion can help prevent damage from harsh sulfates found in shampoos as well as aid the comb out after shampooing.

  2. Step 2

Wash hair regularly to retain it in a state of moisture as provided by water. Depending on the length of the hair, you may not want to agitate the hair in the process of cleaning as this will cause tangling and can led to breakage during comb-out.

  3. Step 3

Apply a good moisturizing conditioner to the hair. Depending on the length of the hair, use more than the dime or quarter size amount to ensure a thorough application from root to tips. Leave on hair a few minute. Rinse thoroughly. Wrap hair in a thick towel but do not rub the hair to dry it as it can cause damage.

  4. Step 4

Make sections in the hair with a rat-tail comb. Twist and clip each section of the hair adding a heavy pomade to the twists but do not detangle before twisting.

  5. Step 5

Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling conditioning spray.

  6. Step 6

Undo the first twisted clip of hair and detangle using a wide tooth soft plastic comb. Start from the ends and work your way toward the roots. Add additional pomade and then separate each detangled section into two smaller sections. Re-twist, clip to hold and move to the next untangled section.

  7. Step 7

Repeat this process over the entire head until all sections have been untangled. Let hair dry naturally or use a hair dryer. Hair can now be worn in its natural kinky state or hot combed to achieve a straighter look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use daily moisturizing sprays on kinky black hair that is not heat straightened to moisturize and keep it looking vibrant and healthy. Straightened kinky hair also needs a daily maintenance routine that might include products added to protect it against heat styling such as pomades or moisturizing crèmes.
