How to Draw Black & White Pictures

Black And White Pen Drawing
-
1
Make a photocopy of a picture you want to draw. The photocopy should be the same size as the drawing you will be creating.
-
2
Place a piece of white paper on top of the photocopy. Using painter's tape, tape the paper and photocopy on a window or light box.

3
Trace the outlines of the photocopy with pencil. You will notice different tones of black, gray and white throughout the photocopy. Assign a number from 1 to 10 for the different areas. 1 should be white and 10 black. A very light gray area will be assigned number 2. The next shade darker will be number 3. Continue to assign numbers to all areas, as they get darker until you get to black, number 10. Write theses numbers lightly on the drawing in pencil. If there are five black areas all five areas will be given a number 10.

On a separate piece of paper draw 10 boxes and label them. This will be a guide for shading. Leave number 1 blank. In number 2 draw very spaced out parallel lines. The lines should be about ¼-inch apart, evenly spaced out. Do the same thing in box number 3, but move the lines closer together. Repeat this with each box moving the lines closer together as the number get bigger. Box number 9 should have the lines so close together they are almost touching. Having the lines closer together will create a darker shade in the box.

5
Use a black pen to trace the pencil outlines on your drawing.
-
6
Fill in the numbered areas in your drawing with parallel lines that correspond to the line in the numbered boxes your created earlier. Erase all the pencil lines from your completed drawing.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a hard time drawing straight parallel lines use a ruler as a straight edge guide. Before you start filling areas in with lines, your drawing should look similar to a paint by number. Instead of filling areas in with color you will be filling them in with different shades of lines.
