How to Arrange Gym Equipment That Will Best Meet Members' Needs
Strategies are involved when you are placing gym equipment in workout facilities. Gym owners consider many factors when they are arranging their machines/weights in and around the gym. According to Rob Killen of Church Fitness, the popularity of certain areas dictates where they will be situated in the gym and how much space is allotted to them.
"The clients will actually dictate how the facility will be set up, but generally there are 4 to 5 main areas in a gym that all need their alloted space," said Killen."Close to 90 percent of all fitness facilities have at least a cardiovascular area and a free weight/plate loaded area, everything is secondary to those two areas."
Spacing is a huge factor when determining the layout of a fitness facility. Killen says every area needs a "certain amount of space" to make the member feel like they are not being cramped.

Cardio is the number one priority for most facilities. It usually gets "top billing" in the club, so visibility is important when planning the location for the treadmills, stairclimbers, bikes or stepmills. Placing cardio equipment by windows is a common theme, so members get the benefit of looking outside and being in natural light.

Free weights/plate loaded area. This area needs its fair share of "space". The industry standard is usually around 40 to 50 square feet surrounding each piece of equipment.

The third area of a gym is usually devoted to a flexibility/stretching area comprised of at least 200 to 800 square feet of space. It should have mats and a few stretching pieces like the "trustretch", which is a stand alone stretching tower.

If the gym owner is fortunate enough to have abundant space, room can also be made for a lowerback/abdominal area. This is an area basically reserved to work a person's "core". Stability balls and resistance bands are also used in this area.

Other pieces of equipment that are crucial to a gym's proper set up include safety related items like a first aid station and AED machine (automated external defibrillator). This machine can help resuscitate someone who is having a heart attack before the paramedics arrive. This area needs to be visible or at least have good signage for easy accessibility.
