How to Burn AVI Files to a CD

AVI, or audio video interleave, is a video file originally created by Microsoft. The file does not have a lack of quality, but is a considerably larger file than that of a WMV or MP4 video of the same content. Like most other video files, it is possible to burn the AVI file onto a CD, as long as the file size does not exceed 700 megabytes--the maximum capacity a CD can hold.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the CD burning software currently installed on the computer.

    • 2

Select the option "Data" CD from the list of available CD types. This allows other computers the ability to open and play the AVI file.

    • 3

Locate the AVI file on the computer and click-and-drag it into the main window of the software. Because there are different variables on the sizing of AVI files, there is no set duration that can fit on a CD. If the AVI file has a higher definition the duration length is going to be smaller than an AVI with smaller definition. Also, AVI files with no audio are smaller in size than AVI files with file. It is best to check the actual file size to determine if it is going to fit on the 700 megabyte CD. Do this by right-clicking the file and selecting "Properties" in PC computers, or "Control" clicking the file and select "Get Info."

    • 4

Click "Burn." The CD now begins to burn. Because the file is probably fairly large it is going to take several minutes before the CD burn is complete.

    • 5

Eject the CD once the burn is complete and you can use it on all other computers.

Tips & Warnings

  • When playing the CD on a different computer it is best to copy the content from the CD onto the other computer's hard drive. Do this by opening the CD up in "My Computer" in Windows, or double-click the CD icon on the desktop in a Mac OS, then click-and-drag the file onto the hard drive. Because of the large file the CD player of the computer is going to run into speed issues with the disk and the movie is going to appear choppy. Copying it over to the desktop fixes this.

  • You cannot play video CDs on a CD player. This not only is because there is no video screen on the CD player, but because CD players are not capable of playing videos. This is why if you choose to burn an AVI file on a CD it can only be played over other computers.
