How to Write an Employer-Free Resume

But, what if you have been self-employed for most of your working life? Or, what if you are a student entering the workforce for the first time? If you have never worked for an employer, or have not worked for an employer in many years, you may have some difficulty drafting a standard resume. 1
Compile a list your various small businesses or entrepreneurial ventures. Include the years you ran each venture, as well as a title such as co-owner, sole proprietor, CEO or president.
-
2
Summarize the responsibilities inherent in each role on your list. Be concise, but descriptive. Because you will be acting, in effect, as your own reference if your work history is predominantly in businesses you have owned, you need to showcase the leadership skills and business sense that kind of responsibility entails to prospective employers.

-
3
Create a separate section of your resume that enumerates your educational background. Include college degrees, certificates, master classes, continuing education, internships or professional development workshops you attended.
-
4
Showcase your special skills. These may include mastery of complex software, excellence in personal accounting or even the ability to drive manual transmission vehicles.
-
5
Don't underestimate your pool of potential references. Even if you were self-employed for many years, you can still include contact information for your business partners. If you are a student fresh out of school with little work experience, include references such as professors, work-study supervisors or any contact person from internship programs or honor societies you may be a member of.

6
Hire a professional resume writer to proofread and suggest improvements to your resume. A fresh set of eyes can help you polish your resume and increase your chances for being hired. You may also offer to share your client list with potential employers.
