How to Apply Blanket Ribbon

Blanket ribbon binding is that soft, silky-like ribbon that edges a blanket or quilt and gives it a finished look. It is also often an integral part of the blanket's design. Usually made of 100 percent woven polyester for luster and sheen, blanket ribbon binding does not fray, comes folded for easy use, and can be machine washed and dried. Bindings come in different textures from cottons to silky polyesters to laces, widths from one-half inch single fold to two-and-three-quarter inches, and hundreds of colors. The easiest method of application is with a sewing machine, but the ambitious can sew the ribbon binding on with needle and thread.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the type, color and width of the blanket ribbon binding.

    • 2

Set your sewing machine for a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch.

    • 3

Narrow side up, fold the ribbon binding over the blanket edge along one side; overlap the bottom edge by one-half inch.

    • 4

Pin the ribbon binding to the blanket making sure to catch the ribbon on both sides of the blanket.

    • 5

Start sewing, using a straight or zigzag stitch, approximately 4 inches up from the bottom of the blanket. Stay as close as possible to the blanket binding edge.

    • 6

Sew until you come to the first corner. Back stitch one-quarter inch from the edge of the blanket. Do not cut the binding.

    • 7

Remove the blanket/quilt from the sewing machine; turn 90 degrees. Fold the binding strip over itself at 45 degrees. Done correctly, the edge of the binding will align to the blanket's raw edge.

    • 8

Begin sewing again and repeat above procedure at each corner until binding ends meet.

    • 9

At the point where the ends meet, cut the end binding leaving a length of 3 inches. Tuck the end under the beginning binding, turn that edge under one-half inch and pin down. Make sure edges line up. Continue sewing to finish the blanket.

    • 10

Turn blanket over, fold binding over the seam line and pin in place. Use a blind stitch to attach binding to the back of the quilt.

    • 11

Sew along the diagonal at each corner to secure the miters.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you purchase a new package of ribbon blanket binding, it will contain detailed instructions inside. If your blanket binding runs out, fold under the edge of the binding that is running out and insert the end of the new binding under the old binding. Continue sewing.
