How to Cash Payroll Checks
A payroll check is compensation to an employee or contracted worker drawn against a company's bank account. Cashing a payroll check requires the check holder to present the check at his bank, or go to the company's bank listed on the payroll check.

Endorse the back of the payroll check with your signature. Your endorsement should be signed near the short edge of the check on the left-hand side. With the printed check facing you, turn the paper upside down with the top edge now at the bottom. Turn the blank backside of the check 90 degrees to the right and sign the top edge.

Take the check to a bank where you hold an active account and present a photo identification card, such as a driver's license to cash the check. In some cases, you may only be allowed to cash part of the check or deposit the entire amount in your account, where it will be held until the check clears the company's bank. Payroll check-cashing policies differ among banks.

Take the payroll check to a branch of the bank printed on the check, along with your photo ID. The bank teller will likely ask for your thumbprint or fingerprint on the check as a security precaution. The ink wipes off easily and leaves no stain.

Go to a grocery store or other business that cashes payroll checks. Be prepared to pay a fee for this service. You may also be required to buy a certain dollar amount of groceries to cash the payroll check.

If you need the entire amount of the payroll check cashed immediately, the best step is to go directly to the bank listed on the check.
Cashing a check at a payday lender or any business that charges a fee may be convenient in the short term, but you will gradually give away a lot of money in services fees that could be saved by going to the bank listed on the payroll check or opening your own account.
