Step 1
Download Gimp (see Resources). The free Gimp editing software is often used as an alternative to Photoshop and has many of the same features. There are Windows, Mac and Unix versions of Gimp available for download.

Open the photo that you would like to make look clearer. To open a photo in Gimp, click on the "File" menu and choose "Open." Locate the file on your hard drive and click "Open."

Go to the "Filters" menu and then "Enhance." Choose "Sharpen" from the list of options. This will bring up the "Sharpen Tool." Use the slider to sharpen the image. The preview window allows you to see what the image looks like as it is being sharpened.

Move the slider to the right to sharpen the image. Monitor your progress in the preview window and only sharpen until the image becomes clear.

Save the sharpened image. Go to "File" and "Save As" and you can save the photo as a new file without altering the original.

Download FastStone Image Viewer. The FastStone Image Viewer has several basic tools, including a sharpening tool. It is only compatible with Windows-based systems.

Open the photo that you want to make clearer. Open a photo by going to "File" and selecting "Open." Browse for the file on your computer and click "Open." Double-click the photo and it will open in full-screen mode.

Press "Ctrl+L" on your keyboard to open the sharpening tool. Like the Gimp tool, the FastStone Image Viewer's sharpening tool is controlled with a slider and there is a preview window so that you can examine the changes to your photo.

Move the slider to the right and the image will sharpen. Continue sharpening until the image clears.

Save the corrected photo. To save the photo as a new file, go to the "File" menu and select "Save As." The photo will be saved as a new file and the original will remain unchanged.
