How to Make Clay Pendants for Jewelry

Make clay pendants for your jewelry designs with polymer clay and a little creativity. You can stamp any design that you like onto the clay, sculpt letters and shapes with the clay or freehand a design with stylus tools that you can later paint with acrylics. Polymer clay is simple to work with; all you need are a few specialized tools to help you make original jewelry.

  • Polymer clay
  • Clay cutter
  • Pasta machine
  • Rubber stamp

Instructions

    • 1

Slice one-half a block of polymer clay in any color you like. Soften the clay with your hands, and then press it onto a firm surface, like a table top. Make sure that your work surface is clean.

    • 2

Set the pasta machine on the highest setting and roll the pressed clay through it. If you'd like the clay to be thicker, fold the sheet in half and roll it through again. You can also combine colors using this method for marbleized pendants.

    • 3

Cut out the shape of your pendant from the sheet of clay. Your shape can be anything at all; use a cookie cutter or any number of clay cutters that are available at the craft store. You can also trace a design that you like onto the clay with a stylus tool such as a knitting needle, and then cut the outline with your clay cutter or a craft knife.

    • 4

Make an indention onto the front of the shaped clay with your rubber stamp. Again, you can use a knitting needle or another stylus tool to write a word or draw an image into the clay. You can also press a section of old lace onto the face of the clay to create a lacy background for your pendant.

    • 5

Place the soft clay pendant onto a cookie sheet covered with tin foil. The foil is to protect your cookie sheet so you may use it again to bake with.

    • 6

Make a hole through the top of the soft clay pendant with a knitting needle. This is the opening you will use to hang your pendant onto a jewelry chain.

    • 7

Bake the pendant according to the directions on the clay package. Let it cool.

    • 8

Apply several coats of Pledge Future Shine onto the pendant to create a shiny, protected coating. Allow the pendant to dry completely between coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Press a glass bead or flat-backed rhinestone into your soft clay pendant before you bake it for added design interest.
