How to Make Wine Coasters
Wine coasters are different from standard beverage coasters because they are round and some contain an additional piece of material that is used to secure the coaster to the bottom of the wine glass. This is convenient during parties or other celebrations as guests can mingle without worrying about finding a coaster should they wish to set their drink down on a table.

1
Cut 3 mm-thick craft foam into 4-inch diameter circles. Alternatively, you can purchase pre-cut craft foam circles in assorted colors at many craft stores.
-
2
Choose iron-on or sew-on appliques to suit your personal tastes. Keep in mind that the applique will need to fit over the base of the wine glass and hold it snugly against the coaster. Look for a design that has a slight recess at the top to allow space for the stem of the glass. Butterfly designs work well for this purpose as do some hearts. The applique should be approximately 4 inches wide for best results.

3
Place the applique onto the round coaster so that it covers roughly one-half of the circle. You should try sliding a wine glass between the coaster and the applique to determine whether the applique is in the proper position.
-
4
Tape the applique in place. Sew a line of stitching around the entire circle approximately 1/4 inch away from the edge. This line of stitching should sew down the outer edges of the applique and attache it firmly to the base of the coaster.
