How to Beat Reactive Depression

Reactive depression is an extension of adjustment disorder, which is a type of mental illness caused by stress. An event like a death in the family, job loss or a move can sometimes provoke depression. Symptoms include sadness, hopelessness, anxiety and insomnia. There are two types of reactive depression: acute (lasts six months or less) and chronic (lasts more than six months). Find out what you can do to treat reactive depression.

Generally, these medications take a few weeks to build up in the system before you start to feel their effects.

  • Contact your therapist or a family member if you start to have suicidal thoughts. Sometimes antidepressants can increase suicidal thoughts. Engage in heathly activities; do not turn to alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant that will exacerbate feelings of depression and can cause you to feel worse about your situation.
