How to Build a Natural Trellis
A natural garden trellis can be a simple and elegant addition to your landscape. Creating a trellis using odds and ends found around your home or in your backyard is a great way to stay on a budget while creating your own design. Place your trellis against a stone wall for a backdrop for growing roses and flowers, or use it to grow creeping bean vines and tomatoes in your vegetable garden. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose the area in your garden where your natural trellis will stand. Clear out all weeds and debris in the area that could take over your trellis plants. Rake over to level and smooth out the surface.
-
2
Pick out your trellis material. Old tree branches are simple to use and are free when found around your yard. Young saplings bend easily and can be incorporated into your design. Look around your home and backyard for other materials. Old gates or wire can be used to create a trellis, so be creative.

3
Measure the area where your trellis will stand to determine the exact dimensions of your structure. Create a "blueprint" to refer to as you begin to build. Keep in mind the plants you'll grown on your trellis to help you determine height and width.
-
4
Attach the trellis material together using garden wire and small nails and to ensure they are secure and snug. Wet branches beforehand if you need to bend them into a tight-fitting spot on your trellis.
-
5
Allow for at least a foot on the bottom of the trellis to use for securing into the ground. Dig a hole to sink the branches into. Place the "feet" of the trellis into the hole and fill up with soil. Press firmly to secure trellis into the ground. Alternatively, you can attach the trellis against a garden wall or fence.
-
6
Plant flowers in the ground to grow up and over your trellis. Roses and creeping jasmine will create a beautiful structure and will come back every year. Water the newly planted flowers once a week until fully established.

Tips & Warnings
Trellis plants will grow around the natural trellis, sometimes taking over the entire structure. You can prune down your plant to free up space or add onto your trellis to accommodate your plants. For a magical glow, add a string of lights in your trellis or a pair of solar lights at the base of the trellis.
