Step by step process of changing the oil in a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • car jack
  • new oil filter
  • new oil
  • 15mm wrench
  1. Step 1

Get the correct replacement filter. Go to any auto parts store or big box store that sells common auto parts. The most common brand is Fram and the # is PH3387A.

  2. Step 2

Get replacement oil. I have found that 10W/30 works the best for this car in all weather situations. It doesn't matter what brand you get as long as it is a name brand. (i.e. Penzoil, Quaker State, Castrol GTX, or Mobil 1)

  3. Step 3

Jack up the car on a level surface with the parking brake engaged.

  4. Step 4

Locate the drain plug of the oil pan located under the engine just past the engine mount and remove it with the 15mm wrench. Have an oil pan ready to collect the oil or you will have a very large mess on your hands.

  5. Step 5

After the oil is done draining locate the oil filter. It is found on the front of the engine and is easily reached from underneath the car. Remove the oil filter, you can usually do this using only your hand. You may have to clean it with a rag if it is too slippery. Be aware that the oil filter will still contain some oil, so have the oil pan at the ready.

  6. Step 6

Before applying the new oil filter it is considered good practice to apply some of the used oil around the rubber seal of the new filter to prevent it from locking in place. Tighten the filter with your hand, there is no need to over exert yourself.

  7. Step 7

Put the drain plug back into the oil pan and tighten. Do not go crazy when tightening the plug or you will not be able to get it off next time. Just tighten it down and give it one more nudge and you should be good.

  8. Step 8

Pop the hood of the car before lowering it from the jack and locate the oil cap. Add 4.5 quarts of oil per the owners manual. Start the car and while it is running, look underneath to make sure there are no leaks. If there are none, you are free to shut the car engine off and lower it from the jack.

  9. Step 9

Locate the dip stick and remove it from the engine. Wipe it off with a clean rag and reinsert it into the engine. Remove the dipstick once again this time making a point to keep the end pointed down. Look at the chart on the stick and determine if the oil pan is full or not.

  10. Step 10

Check to find a place in your community to properly dispose of the oil. They are pretty common. After that you are all done.
