Clicker train your dog to sit. There is no greater tool for your dog's manners than for him/her to know how to sit.

The dog will be referred to as a male named Fido.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Dog
  1. Step 1

Stand in front of Fido with a treat. Hold the clicker in your left hand and the treat in your right. Bring the treat in front of Fido's nose and take it back over his head.

  2. Step 2

Fido will instinctively sit. As soon as his butt hits the floor, click and give him the treat. Repeat several times.

  3. Step 3

The next several times you do this say the command "sit" as you go over his head with the treat. Each time not going as far back. When he sits, click and give him the treat.

  4. Step 4

Now, try and just giving him the command to sit without the treat going over his head. If he does it, great job, he's learned what to do. Constantly reinforce this behavior with repetition. If not, go back to step 3.

Also, if he gets step 3 but not step 4. You can pretend to have food in your right hand and put it over his head. If he sits click and treat him with your other hand. He should realize that your hand doesn't need to be there for him to "sit".
