Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carnival winter squash seeds
  • Outdoor garden area
  • Fertilizer as needed
  • Water as required
  1. Step 1

Purchase a sufficient quantity of Carnival winter squash seeds. Harris Seed Company is one source of this winter squash variety.

  2. Step 2

Each of the mature squash plants will require 25 to 36 square feet of garden space (5' X 5' or 6' X 6' space each). A soil pH of 6.5 is preferred. Cultivate the soil in the garden area until it is smooth and flat. Make sure the soil is warm and the danger of frost has passed before the seeds are planted. The seeds may be planted in rows 5' to 6' apart or in hills 5' to 6' apart. Follow the seed packet directions for planting depth and other recommendations

  3. Step 3

Squash require ample water and full sun. Keep the garden area free of weeds and water regularly. Fertilize as required for the soil conditions. The Carnival winter squash plants are semi-bush plants and will not produce long runners.

  4. Step 4

Carnival winter squash are ready to harvest about 85 days after germination. Usually they are harvested in September or October before the first heavy frost. If stored in a cool and dry area, the squash will keep well.

  5. Step 5

Carnival squash can be easily prepared by rinsing the squash well, cutting the squash in half, and removing the seeds. The squash are placed cut side up in a baking pan. Butter, cinnamon and brown sugar are sprinkled on the cut side, water to a depth of about 1" is poured in the bottom of the baking pan and the pan is covered with aluminum foil. The squash is baked for 60 to 70 minutes or until it is soft and tender.
