Safely Use a Portable Space Heater

Space heaters are often used as an alternative heating source and as a way of saving money on the electric bill. There are different types of space heaters - kerosene, electric, wood burning, and gas. Regardless of the type, space heaters can pose a fire hazard when not used correctly. So here are some safety tips that can help prevent fires.

Step 1

ALWAYS read the manufacturer's instructions. Follow the suggested safety tips because various types of space heaters have their own unique safety hazards.
Step 2

KEEP the space heater away from flammable materials. Space heaters should be kept at least 3 feet from clothing, bedding, draperies, furniture, paper, etc.
Step 3

DO not leave the space heater unattended. When you leave the room or before you go to sleep turn the space heater off and unplug it.
Step 4

NEVER use an extension cord. Also, make sure the cord that comes with the space heater is not frayed, broken or damaged. If so, do not plug it in.
Step 5

KEEP space heaters away from flammable liquids such as gasoline and kerosene.
Step 6

Do not leave children or pets around the space heater unattended.

Tips & Warnings

Buy a space heater with a guard around the heating component.
Have at least one smoke detector in the house and make sure it's working properly.
Make sure the space heater was tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
