Save Money on Your Winter Household Electric Bill

Electric bills can skyrocket during the winter. Here are some useful tips that can help save money on your winter electric bill. In addition, these tips require little or no money to do.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

BUY a programmable thermostat. They're generally inexpensive, and they do a better job of controlling the temperature in your home.

  2. Step 2

BUY a blanket for the water heater. Yes, water heaters get cold too especially if they're located in a garage or basement. The colder it is the harder the water heater has to work (i.e., use more energy).

  3. Step 3

USE a space heater. Is there a room where you spend most of your time? Well, you probably won't need to heat the whole house in that instance. Instead use a space heater in that room. This way you can turn the heat down or off. (See my article How to Safely Use a Portable Space Heater).

  4. Step 4

WEAR warm clothes. Instead of turning the heat up try dressing up. While in the house it's okay to wear a sweater or slip on a pair of long johns for a little extra warmth.

  5. Step 5

TURN the heat down or off at night. Use heavy blankets, comforters or quilts to keep you warm.

  6. Step 6

LET the sunshine in. On a bright and sunny winter day open the curtains and raise those blinds. Let the sun heat your house for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If not used properly space heaters can pose a fire hazard. Make sure you read the manufacturer's safety instructions before using.
