Everybody on the planet has negative thoughts from time to time and it's up to each individual to stop thinking negative. It's okay to have some negative thoughts because they can help us make good decisions but when they become obsessive and spiral out of control into something worse, it's time to nip the bad thoughts in the bud.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be aware of your thoughts. In order to stop thinking negative, you need to be aware of when the negative thoughts start to creep into your mind and take control right away. A lot of times one negative thought can spiral into deeper thinking that makes the original bad thought into something much bigger, or much worse than it actually is. Don't let your mind wander with negative thinking.

  2. Step 2

Transform negative thoughts into positive ones. Only you can block negative thoughts, nobody else can do it for you. Instead, think about something positive or turn the negative thought into a positive one. For example: If you are putting yourself down because of your weight and negative thoughts about it are consuming your brain, tell yourself that you can still make the choice to work toward your goal and accomplish it.

  3. Step 3

Surround yourself with positive people. You may or may not be surprised to know that constantly being around negative people can actually make you start thinking more negatively or being more negative. If you surround yourself with people who are more positive, you are much more likely to think and be more positive yourself. Positive people are likely to reaffirm the positives and give more compliments which will increase self-confidence, whereas negative people will always pick out the bad in all things and situations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use humor to work through a negative thought.
  • Don't take yourself too seriously.
  • Verbalize positive thoughts to yourself in front of a mirror.
