How to Construct Garage Cabinets

In most homes, storage is at a premium. As you accumulate things which you need to run your day to day household tasks, you may run out of places to put them when you are finished. One of the best ways to get more storage is to build cabinets in a room which is already used for that purpose, the garage. Building your own cabinets is an easy process which can be done in an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood 2 feet wide by 8 feet long
  • One piece of 3/4-inch plywood 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 feet long
  • One piece of 3/4-Inch plywood 25 1/2 inches wide by 7 feet 11 inches long
  • Seven pieces of 3/4-inch plywood 2 feet wide by 2 feet long
  • Wood screws
  • Drill with screwdriver bit
  • Handle for cabinet door
  • Three interior hinges

      Your 2-by-8-feet pieces of wood are the sides of your cabinet. Build a rectangle with these and two pieces of your 2-by-2-feet plywood. The top piece of the plywood should be even with the top edges of the sides and the bottom should be 1-inch inset from the other edges. Screw the rectangle together.

      Add the remaining 2-by-2-feet pieces of plywood with a 1-foot space in between each piece. The top of one piece should be 1-foot from the bottom of the one above it. Attach all of these pieces with screws.

      Place the 25 1/2 inch by 8 feet piece of plywood on the rectangle so to covers and entire side. This will be the back of the cabinet. Stand the cabinet up

      Place the hinges in the interior of the cabinet so they are approximately one inch from the top and bottom and in the center of the long side.

      Attach your last piece of plywood to the hinges. Attach handle to the outside of the cabinet door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feel free to move the shelves around if you want them bigger or smaller than 1-foot. Just make sure you mark their location to see if you like where they are before you screw them in.

  • Don't forgo the back of the unit as this provides much needed stability.
