How to Erase a CD RW With Windows XP

Re-writable CDs, or CD-RWs, can be rewritten as the name implies. Doing this in Windows is less straightforward than it is in other systems, however. The good thing is that, while the process isn't entirely intuitive, it's easy to remember once you've done it once. Learn the steps and you'll be well on your way to writing and re-writing data to your CD-RW as many times as you want.

      Insert the CD and open "My Computer" by double-clicking the desktop icon.

      Right-click the CD drive and click "Open." This will open a window where you can place files you wish to burn to the CD.

      Click the "Erase this CD-RW" button in the CD Writing Tasks pane. This will bring up a wizard; click "Next" to begin the erasing process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all CDs are erasable; make sure your CD is a rewritable disc (CD-RW) before following these steps.
