How to Make MP3 a Smaller File Size

MP3 audio is one of the most popular audio formats and is mainly used on portable media players, websites and audio applications. MP3 file sizes depend on the bitrate and length of the audio file. You can, however, reduce the file sizes. This is convenient when uploading a large amount of songs on a portable player with little memory space. Reducing MP3 file size is made possible using free audio converter programs.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a free audio converter program, such as Switch Audio Converter (see Resources). Another free program to consider is Audacity (see Resources).

    • 2

Launch the program after it has installed and click "Add Files." Locate on your computer the MP3 file you want to downsize and click "Open" to load it on your program.

    • 3

Highlight the input file and click the "Play" button to preview it. Make sure it is the right audio file to downsize.

    • 4

Select ".mp3" on the output format window, because you are keeping the same audio format. Click "Encoder Options" to adjust the quality settings. Drop the bitrate to at least 128Kbps. Lower the quality settings if you want the file size even smaller. This will reduce the file size. Keep in mind that reducing the file size also reduces the quality just a little bit.

    • 5

Click "Browse" and select the output folder to save the file to after it has been reduced. Click "Convert." When the conversion is complete, the MP3 file is smaller than the original.

sorry but reducing size makes the quality far worse - I want good quality not some thing that sounds like it was recorded on a scratched record or out of a tin can
