Replacing your current toggle light switch with a 3-way dimmer switch will help you cut down on energy costs because you can dim the lights when appropriate for the room. You should be able to replace your toggle switch within an hour. Most hardware stores have a variety of dimmer switches for you to choose from.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off the circuit breaker to the electrical outlet where you will install your dimmer switch.

  2. Step 2

Remove the screw mounting the switch's face plate to the wall. Pull the face plate off.

  3. Step 3

Remove the two retaining screws that secure the switch to the junction box.

  4. Step 4

Label each wire with a piece of masking tape to indicate where it connects. Loosen the terminal screws on the switch to remove the wires from the switch.

  5. Step 5

Strip off 1/4 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires that were connected to the toggle switch. This will ensure that you make a clean connection inside the new dimmer switch.

  6. Step 6

Connect the circuit wires to the dimmer switch by bending the ends and wrapping them around the switch terminals. Tighten the terminals down with a screwdriver. Some switches come with wire leads installed. For these, use plastic wire nuts to connect the house wires to the switch wires.

  7. Step 7

Connect the "common" lead on the dimmer switch to the common circuit wire. This wire may have been attached to the copper screw on the toggle switch or may have been labeled "common."

  8. Step 8

Connect the copper grounding wire inside the junction box to the dimmer switch's grounding lead, often a green insulated wire.

  9. Step 9

Fit the wires back into the junction box and attach the dimmer switch to the junction. Secure the face plate over the switch.

  10. Step 10

Restore the power supply to the switch by turning on the circuit breaker inside the electrical panel.
